OPFOR units, or opposing forces, are most often fictional units equipped with neutral, civilian or insurgent equipment and gear. These units most often form the enemy side for training purposes. We have prepared a selection of traditional semi-military equipment that best fits OPFOR units as we know them, for example, from military exercises, movies or military conflicts.
The word OPFOR means opposing forces and is a designation of units or parties of the enemy that are formed in the framework of military exercises or other training. OPFOR units are mostly neutral units that are often (but not always) distinguished by their equipment from the army so that it is obvious at first glance that they are the enemy side.
In the military, OPFOR is most often used during exercises to simulate the real situation or mission the soldiers are preparing for. This allows soldiers to practice reacting to real live targets and prepare for a live mission.
The OPFOR side is also widely used in the world of airsoft, mostly by milsim units. This is done, for example, when practicing CQB procedures or procedures in the woods, and as OPFOR is most often invited one of the friendly units. Of course, the form of the OPFOR varies. Sometimes it is more of a shooting action where proper head protection is definitely recommended and sometimes the LARP part prevails.
The advantage of OPFOR units is their freedom and possibility of action. While the drilling unit has to follow the exact procedures and often they are unnecessarily bound by the rules, the opposing unit is given freedom in this respect and can invent all sorts of tricks to frustrate the opponent.
Of course, the outfit may depend on the scenario of the event. Sometimes it's more specific, sometimes it's loose. As a rule of thumb, it is good to be able to tell at a glance that the individual belongs to the OPFOR side. This is mainly accomplished by neutral gear in the form of unmasked clothing such as the colors Tan, Ranger Green, Gray or Black. Alternatively, neutral colours can be easily mixed with a camouflage pattern.
In airsoft, rebel gear inspired from Afghanistan, Iraq and similar oriental countries is very popular for the opposition side of the army. The basis of any such setup is a pakul for the head and a traditional Afghan kurta for the body. Instead of a tactical plate carrier, a lightweight chestrig or bandolier should then serve as a carrier in which to put all the necessary items, including magazines and radios.
The complete equipment might then look like this:
- Pakul
- Traditional clothing - Kurta
- Bandolier or any other chestrig
- Classic wooden AK74
