Rail covers for airsoft replicas

I'm sure you've come across mounting rail caps. On the one hand, it may seem that these caps are unnecessary, but at the same time, let's ask ourselves a question: “But is it just a fashion accessory or is it something more?”.
We'll answer that question below, but first we need to talk a little bit about the most common types of forestays, more specifically, mounting rails.

Types of mounting rails

To begin with, it is important to be clear about the types of mounting rails we will be dealing with. For modern guns, there are basically three main types of rails that are compatible with caps, namely Picatinny, M-LOK and KeyMod

Picatinny Mounting Rail

Picatinny was one of the major mounting rail systems in the early 2000s. Its shape made it perfect for the need of mounting lights and lasers on the forearm of the gun. The big disadvantage is the large bulkiness of the forearm. In addition, there is the possibility of being cut by the edges of the protruding rails.  This type of forearm was so popular that we can still see models of weapons on which this type can be found, for example we can mention MK18.

Tip:
What is the difference between RIS and Picatinny? Basically it is the designation of the same rail, with both civilian and military designations being used.

M-LOK rails and variants

After the initial success of the Picatinny, there was a need to create a lighter variant with more versatility. Magpul developed the M-LOK mounting system during its Masada/ACR rifle project and eventually licensed the design to other manufacturers free of charge after an approval process. This style of rail eventually became the de facto industry standard for rifles such as the AR15 and is found on most production foregrips today.

KeyMod rails

The KeyMod was a specific design that was intended to promote its adoption throughout the industry. While it was introduced by VLTOR Weapon Systems two years before the M-LOK, it did not catch on like the aforementioned. You can still find caps for the KeyMod, but today you'll mostly see caps that are designed for both the KeyMod and the M-LOK.

Why get rail covers?

Rail covers are a matter of preference, but there are some solid advantages to using them. Ergonomics and comfort are among them. Then, for real guns, they also have thermal protection. They are most often made of rubber and plastic, but we can also see metal variants.

Comfort

While some people don't consider comfort a priority, if you don't feel comfortable when using a gun, it will affect your performance and accuracy.
Rail covers provide a comfortable surface to rest your hand on while shooting. This is especially useful with RIS type rails. And, as we mentioned before, it is with RIS rails that the cover can protect your hand from unpleasant injury. This is especially true if you prefer to shoot without gloves

Safety

RIS rails, as we wrote above, protrude above the surface of the forearm itself. This makes it more likely that your hand will be injured or, even more often, your gloves and uniforms will be torn, especially when carrying the gun on your back. The reason for this is the lack of finishing of the rail in the factory, more precisely the failure to shave off the sharp edges. For this reason, the use of a protective cap is the best possible option to prevent injuries and damage.

Temperature protection

The forearm of weapons is most often made of metal. This gets very hot when used on sharp weapons. For airsoft guns in cold weather or freezing temperatures, it gets very cold again, and in summer, try touching a gun left accidentally in the harsh sun. In neither case is it pleasant. It is possible to use gloves, but this is only temporary protection. That's why the use of covers protects the hand from both heat and cold.

Ergonomics/Control

Rail covers can improve the ergonomics of your rifle and can also help to aid control. Once you find your preferred hand position on the forearm, you can install the covers in that location. In lower light conditions, they can then help guide your hand into the proper grip of the rifle.
Rail covers can be textured in various ways to provide a more comfortable grip while preventing possible slippage of the hand on the forearm, we can think of them as a basic handstop. This makes it easier to hold and control the gun than it is to slide on a smooth aluminum grip.

Mounting rail cover manufacturers and our recommendations

From our proven manufacturers we can offer FMA, WADSN, Metal, Combat Zone Tactical.  But as with the handles, these are accessories that you can't go wrong with, so choose the mounting rail covers mainly according to their compatibility with your type of mounting (RIS, Picatiny, Keymod, Mlok...) and the look you like or what they hold well.
