A MOSFET for airsoft guns is an electronic component used in electronic (AEG) guns to improve the switching of current between the battery and the motor, thereby extending battery life, speeding up trigger response, and saving switching contacts. Is it necessary to purchase a MOSFET, how does it work, what types of MOSFETs are there, and is a MOSFET or a processor better? We will look at this below!
A mosfet is a device that controls the flow of electricity in a circuit. It works by using a small amount of voltage to control a larger amount of voltage flowing through it. When a small voltage is applied to the mosfet, an electric field is created, which then allows a higher voltage to flow between the source (battery) and the load (motor). mosfets can be found on the supply cables between the trigger contacts and the battery. To ensure there is enough space for the battery inserted into the tube/stock, we recommend the Perun MOSFET, which is the smallest MOSFET on the market.
Mosfets are used in AEG replicas to increase the reliability and service life of your airsoft weapon. That is why we are inclined to think that your weapon should have at least one mosfet. Even with cheaper upgrades to your weapon, the best option is to invest in a mosfet, or even better, a processor unit. Basic mosfets help improve the trigger response of our weapon, increase the rate of fire, and prevent the trigger contacts from burning out, while advanced ones add various programmable functions. Today, most manufacturers already include at least a mosfet in their weapons as standard, so there is no need to purchase one separately.
Technical advice: When installing a mosfet yourself, we do not recommend using a transformer soldering iron. Using one may damage the mosfet itself. The best option is to use a tip soldering station. It is also important to pay attention to the correct polarity of the cables. If you are unsure, we recommend entrusting your weapon to our service center.
One of the main advantages of using a mosfet is that it reduces wear on the trigger contacts. Without a mosfet, the trigger contacts will eventually become damaged due to sparking, which causes burns on the contact surfaces, which can lead to the contacts burning out and, as a result, the gun will not fire. With a mosfet installed, the contacts no longer complete the circuit directly, but instead, when they approach each other, they send a pulse to the mosfet indicating that the trigger has been pulled.
Another indisputable advantage of a mosfet in a gun is a significant acceleration of the trigger response time. With traditional trigger contacts, there may be a delay between pressing the trigger and the actual spinning of the motor. However, with a mosfet installed, this delay is significantly reduced, resulting in a much faster trigger response.
Our tip: Processor units offer even faster trigger response and many adjustable programs.
A mosfet can also help increase battery life by reducing the amount of energy that would otherwise be lost through the trigger contacts. When using traditional contacts, a significant amount of energy is lost in the form of heat (burning), which can lead to faster battery discharge. However, with a mosfet installed, this energy loss is minimized, resulting in increased battery life and more stable performance. In addition, a gun with a mosfet does not draw any current when idle, so the battery will not discharge spontaneously when connected to the gun for a long time.
Basic mosfets are the simplest type of mosfets and are designed to be inexpensive, small, and primarily protect the trigger contacts. They are relatively easy to install and are a great choice for beginners. Basic mosfets have limited functionality and are generally less expensive than advanced mosfets, active brakes, or processor boards. This option is perfectly adequate for players who do not need ultra-fast replica response, a sensitive trigger, and other programmable features. Some manufacturers, such as Jefftron, also produce MOSFETs that are installed directly into the gearbox.
Essentially, these are basic mosfets, but they are additionally equipped with an active motor braking function. This means that they use the motor's excess energy to stop it. This further protects the internal parts of the weapon. The active brake excels in high-speed setups, where it prevents another shot from being fired when the trigger is released. Active brakes can also be found in processor units, where we can also set the braking intensity according to our needs. Advanced mosfets, also known as processor units, are more sophisticated devices. They are designed to allow you to use your weapon to its full potential, mainly because they offer a wider range of programmable functions to protect the internal parts of the weapon. Advanced mosfets are more expensive than basic mosfets. Today, most processor units are installed directly into the gearbox. We highly recommend purchasing a processor unit, because basic mosfets are now obsolete and are being replaced by programmable mosfets/processor units.

But it won't be easy, even though we are all for processor units (when possible), because each of us has our own specific requirements and needs, and it would not be entirely correct to make a universal decision. Therefore, instead, we will summarize the pros and cons for each type separately.
Mosfets are a great addition to any airsoft gun and can significantly improve its performance and extend the life of internal parts and batteries. Basic MOSFETs are a good choice for undemanding users.
Advantages: low price, simple design, smaller dimensions, universal use, can be used in machine guns or atypical weapons after modification Disadvantages: cannot be programmed, only one specific function, soldering required.
Processor units are suitable for players who want to take their weapon to the next level. They have many programmable functions that allow you to maximize the potential of your weapon.
Advantages: includes MOSFET and active brake, battery under-voltage monitoring, large number of programmable functions, often drop-in, programming via trigger/mobile app, universal use Disadvantages: higher price, more complex design compared to MOSFET, cannot be used in machine guns
To sum it all up, mosfets are ideal for undemanding users who want a cheap but functional upgrade that can be used in almost any weapon. The processor unit is suitable for more demanding players who want to play around with the weapon settings and don't mind making a slightly larger investment, which is definitely worth it, but unfortunately it cannot be used in all weapons due to the shape of the processor.
